For the weight saving of various transportation structures such as aircraft and automobiles, advanced composite materials have been applied to the structures. However, the fracture process of the composite materials is so complexed that it is difficult to judge the damaged condition from the exterior appearance. In order to ensure the safety and reliability of the composite structures, non-destructive inspection systems and health monitoring systems suitable for composite materials are demanded.

Our laboratory is currently trying to establish the health diagnostic systems for composite structures in collaboration with several companies, especially based on ultrasonics and optics.
